Home / Cape Sounion Sunset Tour
A private van, a coastal drive along the Athens Riviera, and one of the most dramatic sunsets in Greece. Just for you and your group.
The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion has stood at the edge of Attica for 2,400 years. Lord Byron carved his name into its marble columns. But the moment that stops everyone in their tracks is simpler: the sun dropping into the Aegean, turning the ancient stone gold.
We drive you there in our private Mercedes Vito van - no tour buses, no strangers, no fixed schedule. Along the way, we stop at Lake Vouliagmeni, one of Attica's best-kept secrets: a natural thermal lake where warm mineral waters meet the sea, framed by pine trees and limestone cliffs. Swim, relax, or simply sit and take it in - before continuing south to the temple.

💡 Driver's tip
For the best sunset photos, position yourself on the south side of the temple looking west. Most tourists crowd the north entrance - we know the quieter spot that frames the columns perfectly against the sea.
- George & Tassos
Standing at the southernmost tip of Attica, Cape Sounion is home to the Temple of Poseidon - one of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples in the country. Built in 444 BC during the golden age of Pericles, it sits on a rocky headland 60 meters above the Aegean Sea. Lord Byron was so moved by the site that he carved his name into one of its marble columns, a mark still visible today.
But what makes Sounion truly unforgettable is the light. As the sun descends toward the horizon, the white Pentelic marble columns turn deep amber, then gold, then orange. The sea below shifts from turquoise to copper. It is one of those rare moments where a photograph cannot fully capture what you are seeing - and that is exactly why people come back.
Group tours to Cape Sounion depart at fixed times, stop for exactly as long as the itinerary allows, and share the van with strangers. A private van from Athens Taxi Van means you leave when you want, stop wherever you like along the coast, and spend as much time at the temple as you choose. If the light is extraordinary and you want to stay for an extra half hour, we wait. If you want to stop at Vouliagmeni Lake on the way back, we stop.
The route follows the Athenian Riviera southward - past Glyfada, Voulia, and Varkiza - before the road narrows and the landscape becomes wilder. About halfway, we stop at Lake Vouliagmeni: a brackish thermal lake fed by warm underground springs, tucked between pine-covered cliffs and the open sea. The water temperature stays around 22–29°C year-round, making it an ideal mid-trip stop. Swim in the thermal waters (entrance fee applies, paid on site, no reservation needed for general entry) or enjoy a coffee at the lakeside abraOvata restaurant before continuing south to Sounion. It is one of those places that surprises first-time visitors every time.
After Vouliagmeni, the road south grows quieter. Pine forests meet rocky coves, small fishing harbors appear and disappear, and the coastline reminds you why the ancient Greeks believed Poseidon ruled here. The 70 km drive from Athens takes approximately one hour, but it's one of those journeys where you're not in a hurry to arrive.
Summer sunsets at Sounion fall between 8:30 and 9:00 PM, meaning you can visit after a full day in Athens. Winter sunsets come earlier - around 5:30 PM - but the site is quieter, the air is crisp, and the low angle of the winter sun creates some of the most dramatic light of the year. Spring and autumn offer a balance of good weather and fewer crowds. Whatever the season, we recommend arriving at least 45 minutes before sunset to explore the site and find your spot.
The archaeological site has an entrance fee of approximately €20 per adult (reduced for EU students and seniors). The walk up to the temple from the parking area is short but involves uneven ground - comfortable shoes are recommended. There is a small café and gift shop at the base. Photography is unrestricted throughout the site, and the view from the north colonnade remains one of the most photographed spots in Greece.
To reserve your tour, message George or Tassos directly on WhatsApp with your preferred date, group size, and pickup address in Athens. We will confirm availability and agree on departure time based on that day's sunset. Payment is made at the end of the tour in cash or by card. There is no online booking system by design - direct communication means we can adapt your tour from the moment you reach out.
About the tour
Approximately 4–5 hours total. It's a private tour so there's no fixed schedule - if you want to stay longer at the temple or stop somewhere along the coast, we adjust accordingly.
We recommend leaving 2.5–3 hours before sunset. This gives you time to enjoy the coastal drive and arrive at the temple with at least 45 minutes to explore before the golden hour begins.
The archaeological site entrance is not included - it's paid directly on site (approximately €20 per adult, reduced for EU students and seniors).
Practical info
Yes, Lake Vouliagmeni is a standard stop on this tour. You can swim in the thermal waters (entrance fee ~€17, paid on site — no reservation needed) or simply stop for a coffee at the lakeside restaurant if you prefer not to swim.
Absolutely. The site is far less crowded in winter and the low-angle winter sun creates stunning light on the marble columns. The drive along the coast is just as beautiful year-round.
Our Mercedes Vito van seats up to 8 passengers comfortably. The flat rate covers the entire vehicle - ideal for families and groups travelling together.
Message us with your date, group size, and pickup address. We'll confirm availability and plan your departure time around the sunset.
